What BMI Is
BMI is a number derived from weight and height. What BMI Does Tell You
BMI provides a quick screening indicator for weight categories that correlate with health risks at the population level. Large studies consistently show that people with overweight or obese BMI have a higher average risk of:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease and stroke
- High blood pressure
- Certain cancers
- Sleep apnea
- Joint problems (osteoarthritis)
Underweight BMI is also associated with risks including nutritional deficiency, reduced bone density, weakened immune function, and cardiovascular complications.
What BMI Doesn't Tell You

This simple measurement often predicts cardiovascular risk better than BMI alone.
Waist-to-height ratio
Waist circumference divided by height. A ratio below 0.5 is generally considered healthy for most adults β meaning your waist circumference should be less than half your height. This metric accounts for body frame, adding context that waist measurement alone lacks.
Body fat percentage
The proportion of total body weight that is fat. Healthy ranges are roughly 10β20% for men and 18β28% for women, varying by age and activity level. Body fat percentage requires measurement devices such as bioelectrical impedance scales, underwater weighing, or DEXA scans.
Blood tests
Blood glucose, HbA1c (long-term blood sugar), cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure directly measure metabolic health in ways BMI cannot even approximate. Regular blood tests are among the most informative health indicators available.
How to Use a BMI Calculator Effectively
A BMI calculator is a fast, useful starting point. To use it well:
- Use it as a screening tool, not a diagnosis. A BMI result places you in a broad category β it does not determine your individual health status.
- Use it to track trends over time rather than fixating on a single measurement. A gradually increasing BMI trend is more meaningful than any single number.
